What next for EU nationals in the UK after the Brexit vote?

As the shock of the EU referendum subsides and consideration of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU gets underway, millions of European citizens living here (and millions of British citizens living elsewhere in Europe) are left in uncertainty regarding their residence status.

It is clear that there are no immediate plans, nor legal basis, to reclass their residence at least until either an exit deal is reached or, if no agreement is reached, two years have passed since the triggering of Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU), the mechanism for withdrawal.
