2020

Healys takes to Brighton Palace Pier for International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is celebrated across the globe every year on 8th March. In Brighton, Healys LLP organised the biggest female-led event – Making Herstory – a show-stopping celebration of Women in Business.

On a wet and windy Thursday afternoon, over 170 women from across Sussex travelled to Brighton Palace Pier to Make HERstory. Among these attendees were Zoe Lyons, Lynne Parker and Katherine Atkins of Funny Women. Funny Women is a female-led network of comedians, who ran a workshop, hosted a panel discussion and ended the day with a HERlarious comedy show. At the end of the event, Healys ran a charity raffle, with all proceedings going to the Purple Community Fund and Rise. Healys began the Women in Business network as a way to tackle workplace inequality and provide a space for women to interact with, support and learn from one another. It is led by Stephanie Prior, Business & Development and Marketing Manager for Healys.

2019

Healys Take on Secret Santa in Aid of Great Ormond Street Christmas Appeal

In December 2019, staff at Healys LLP came together to compete in the “Great Healys Bake Off” in order to raise funds and support GOSH Christmas Stocking Appeal 2019. Employees from across the company’s offices were invited to take part by baking cakes or judge the bake off in exchange for donation. The team raised over one hundred and fifty pounds, which was then used to purchase a variety of gifts for children of all ages. Additionally, a number of staff purchased toys to add to the sack of gifts. The team was then invited to Great Ormond Street to deliver the sack of gifts for the children ahead of Christmas day.

Healys LLP Join Forces With Kingston Smith To Take On Pride Parade In Support Of Equality & Diversity

Healys LLP and Kingston Smith LLP participated in the Pride Parade 2019 to publicly celebrate equality and diversity. The Brighton Pride Festival is the biggest and best Pride event in the UK. This year’s festival has already raised over £700,000 towards achieving an equal and diverse playing field for all.

2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Inn uprising that ignited the Pride movement, and the theme for this year’s parade is ‘Generations of Love – Celebrating 50 years of campaigning with Pride’. With this in mind, Healys & Kingston Smith collaborated to celebrate the 1960s. Additionally, Healys LLP and Kingston Smith LLP used Pride as an opportunity to promote the fact that as firms and individuals, they are ‘more than a suit’. Staff walked in the parade wearing something to showcase ‘who they are’ – the people behind the suit; the marathon runners, scuba divers, dancers, drag queens, lovers, hippies and more!

The Sky Is The Limit As Healys Take On The Rockinghorse iDrop

On Friday 21^st June, Business Development & Marketing Manager, Stephanie Prior, abseiled from the British Airways i360 in aid of the Rockinghorse charity. This was the first-ever sunset drop which took place on the longest day of the year. Stephanie was lowered from the i360 pod, which is 450ft high, as the sun set for the evening. This fundraiser was in aid of the Chalkhill Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit in Haywards Heath, the only mental health inpatient unit for young people in Sussex.

Stephanie comments:

“I am extremely excited (and slightly terrified) to be taking part! It’s a great opportunity for me to set a personal challenge to complete while raising money for such a worthy and current cause.

“Mental health increasingly affects many individuals and families. I am aware that there is more to be done in terms of education, medication, research and funding in order to provide adequate support for those in need. It’s an honour to support this cause.

“I am very grateful to everyone who has supported me so far through donations and for the support from my employer and sponsor Healys LLP.”

About the Rockinghorse:

The Rockinghorse charity is best-known as the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton, and a vital supporter of the neighbouring Trevor Mann Baby Unit along with its sister site, the Special Care Baby Unit in Haywards Heath. Additionally the charity works in partnership with local hospitals, respite centres and specialist children’s services throughout Sussex.

Team Healys LLP to Take Part in the Seven Port Challenge Charity Cycle Ride 2019 in aid of The Mayor’s Charities sponsored by Woodhart Group. !

From Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th May 2019, Managing Partner, Dino Skinner and colleagues Ros Edwards and Jack Wingrove, took part in the Seven Port Challenge which consists of reaching the Seven Ports of Shoreham Port, Portsmouth, Caen (Ouistreham), Honfleur, Fecamp, Dieppe & Newhaven, on a 180 mile bike ride.

The Seven Port Challenge is an annual charity cycle ride, which is kindly sponsored by headliners Woodhart Group and associate sponsor Chandlers Building Supplies, to raise funds and awareness for the following worthy charities chosen by the Mayor of Brighton & Hove:

Martlets Hospice – Martlets provide practical care and emotional support to people with terminal illnesses and their loved ones. The Martlets Hospice opened in 1997 and has supported over 25,000 local people during this time.

Rockinghorse – Rockinghorse is a Brighton-based charity that has been helping to improve the lives of sick children throughout Sussex for over 50 years. Funds raised are put towards life-saving and cutting-edge medical equipment, with the aim of ensuring that sick children are treated in the best environment possible to support their needs.

Off The Fence – Off The Fence provides a range of support to those who find themselves sleeping on the streets. For 20 years, this charity has committed to its vision; to see an end to social and spiritual poverty in Brighton and Hove.

Grace Eyre Foundation – The Grace Eyre Foundation is a Sussex-based charity that works with people who have learning disabilities. This charity supports service users in being part of their local communities. This includes support in gaining independence, obtaining housing, finding employment and joining activities. They work in Brighton & Hove and across Sussex and the South East.

2018

Healys Supports the Brighton University Business School Awards

Healys proudly supported the Brighton University Business School Awards, where we sponsored the Healys LLP Prize. We are pleased to announce that Robert Bateman is the winner of this year’s award. The Business School Awards recognise outstanding graduates in their respective courses. Selected at the exam board as the best performing CPE student in the Law of Contract Module, Robert was presented the Healys LLP Prize at a prize-giving ceremony attended by university staff and students, by the Deputy Head of School, Lucy Jones.

2017

After another great year, Healys LLP  held an informal Autumn drinks reception to thank many of their long standing clients and supporters. The event was held at Pub Du Vin in Ship Street, Brighton on Thursday 2nd of November. In attendance, was a mixture of friendly faces from businesses in Brighton and Hove, Sussex, London and many parts of the South East which created a real buzz and high energy in the room.

At the event Healys was offering a piece of Brighton’s artistic heritage for the price of a raffle ticket, with the proceeds of £1,820 going to support local charity Team Domenica. Healys has also agreed to offer a work placement for one of Team Domenica’s candidates. The work inspired by the i360 has been donated by Peter Spence, its creator, and Bailey Contemporary Arts as top prize in the draw.

The painting was seen by thousands of visitors to the Brighton Festival in May this year. It also features 360 contributions from members of the public. The substantial piece, which is three metres wide and one metre high, stood outside Bailey Contemporary Arts gallery on Kings Road Arches, next to the i360, for the duration of the festival. Passers-by were invited to paint a small section on its canvas, which is presented as a triptych (a work on three panels hinged together) as part of a community art project entitled ‘MAY i paint 360’.

Frederique Bailey, founder of Bailey Contemporary Arts, said: “This is a remarkable piece of community art, and the response when we had it displayed for contributions was amazing. The youngest person painting a section was aged just three and the oldest 97.

“This work represents community art at its best, using a particular technique through the talent of Peter Spence that ensures every contribution has resulted in something high quality, original and fascinating.”

Dino Skinner, Managing Partner of Healys, said: “We’re delighted to be able to use our autumn party, which will be attended by many of Brighton’s business leaders, to raise money for Team Domenica with such a generous prize. Team Domenica does wonderful work training and providing worthwhile job opportunities for young people.”

The winner of the artwork donated it to the I360.

Team Healys joined a record 700 teams in the largest 10km Legal Walk ever on the 22^nd May 2017 before attending the after party on Carey Street and the Law Society HQ in Chancery Lane.

We helped raise the £800,000 total towards free legal advice services – beating last year’s £740,000.

The Lord chief justice said ‘it shows what lawyers can do for those who do not have access to justice,’

Free legal advice services change people’s lives, providing them with expert help to reduce debt, poverty and homelessness, and combat discrimination and injustice. LLST work with charities fund to ensure every pound raised goes as far as it possibly can.

2016

Healys Partners With University Of Sussex

Healys is pleased to announce that it has partnered with the University of Sussex in its launch of the Sussex Clinical Legal Education this autumn, following two years of planning and preparation.

The Clinical Legal Education programme offers students the opportunity to gain invaluable experience, seeing how law operates in the real world, while providing crucial assistance to those in need. It is an integral part of the University’s commitment to engage with the community and to promote human rights and access to justice.

Clinical Legal Education facilitates a variety of pro-bono projects. These projects range from giving direct legal advice and assistance to the public on family and employment law issues, assistance in the County Courts, projects assisting local charities with community issues such as homelessness and employment rights to research for action groups and other non governmental organisations in legal challenges.

Dino Skinner “We are pleased to be part of this ongoing initiative. Not only does it give help to people that otherwise would not be able to gain access to legal advice and assistance  but provides valuable experience to the next generation of lawyers.  This also shows Healys’ commitment to local and wider community”.

Healys’ charity team took part in the Tough Mudder Challenge on Saturday 30 April 2016. Tough Mudder is a series of hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle race – mud run events designed by British Special Forces to challenge the toughest of the tough.

The team were fundraising for Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. The charity aims to raise awareness of the problem of lung cancer, to promote an intensive research programme into the causes, prevention and management of the disease. The 12 person team raised £4,156.25 for the charity.

Participants included: Charlie Pattihis, Luiz Costa, Kelly Goddard, Nick Evans, Navid Raja, Jon Budge, Omar Shams, Eileen Herrmann and Arthur Horsfall all from the London office.

2015

Healys’ charity team took part in the Tough Mudder Challenge on Sunday 03rd May 2015. Tough Mudder is a series of hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle race – mud run events designed by British Special Forces to challenge the toughest of the tough.

The team were fundraising for Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. The charity aims to raise awareness of the problem of lung cancer, to promote an intensive research programme into the causes, prevention and management of the disease. The ten person team raised £2,564 for the charity.

The team were also invited to appear on the one show the day after the event.

Participants included: Charlie Pattihis, Luiz Costa, Tracy Evans, Nick Evans, Jamie Oliver, Jon Budge, Omar Shams, Nagina Hussain, Julia Stirling and Paul Metcalfe, all from the London office.

March for Royal Marsden

Donna and Nick completed the 14 mile Marsden March accompanied by Right Said Fred who cut the ribbon to start the event.

This is Nick’s third March for the Royal Marsden for which over the three years we have raised over £5k. Current total for this year is over £1,300.

The Royal Marsden is a cancer charity deadicated to beating cancer. We’re a world-leading innovation centre who pioneer new treatments that save lives. Support The Royal Marsden and you’re investing in a future beyond cancer for you and for everyone you know.

Gemma Williams runs for Tommys

Gemma Willaims ran the Brighton Half Marathon on Sunday 22 February and the Brighton marathon on 12 April.

Gemma is raising £340 for Tommys. Tommys wants to give every baby the best chance of being born healthy. Right now, in the UK, one in four women loses a baby during pregnancy or birth.

Tommys fund medical research into the causes of premature births, stillbirths and miscarriages. They have set up three research centres in the UK, in St Thomas Hospital in London, St Marys in Manchester and the recently established centre in the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh. Each centre focused its research efforts on different issues relating to pregnancy.

2014

Tonbridge School
One of Healys LLP’s Partners, Robert Johnson, is supporting Tonbridge School by being part of the School’s Mentoring Scheme. Robert supports the school by providing career talks and coaching students. In addition, Robert assists the school by providing work experience at Healys LLP or at other companies through his contacts.

Wills Aid
A member of our Private Client Team, Susan Peck, regularly attends the Age UK Will Writing Clinic on a quarterly basis. Susan raised £1,148.75 in donations last year.

London Legal Walk 2014
A number of our staff took part in the London Legal Walk 2014. The London Legal Walk is a charity for the poorest and the most vulnerable people in our community from whom access to justice is out of reach. Free legal advice makes a huge difference to their lives. The recession has increased poverty and reduced support services. Meanwhile, funding for the advice centres has reduced; particularly since the 2013 removal of much of legal aid for humanitarian or social welfare legal advice. So charity and philanthropy have increased in importance for supporting those in need. The London Legal Walk raises essential funds to aid that cause. The London Legal Support Trust’s grants and support work helps thousands of people and many others in London and the South East.

Belleveue Mortlakes – 7-a-Side
A team from Healys LLP took part in a charity tournament in aid of CHICKS. CHICKS is a national children’s charity that provides these 8–15 year olds with FREE respite breaks at retreats in Cornwall and Devon so that they can swim in the sea, visit the countryside, ride a horse and run around in green wide open spaces; often for the first time in their lives. Whilst there these children can let off steam, make new friends, build their confidence, have fun and ultimately build some positive childhood memories.  The breaks offered by CHICKS are just the beginning and the effects last a lifetime.Each year CHICKS needs to raise £1.3 million and it receives no government funding.Whilst children are currently being pushed further into poverty, CHICKS are trying to provide many more disadvantaged children with the chance to benefit from some positive time away.

The Argus Appeal
Dino Skinner is participating in a Cycle Challenge for the Argus Appeal. The Argus Appeal is a charity of The Argus, Sussex’s only daily newspaper. The appeal is celebrating more than 50 years of support given to local people who are in need in the local Sussex community.  All monies raised by The Argus Appeal is used to help those in need in the community. Working at the heart of the Sussex community enables the charity to see, first hand, who is in need and to be able to act quickly to make a difference.  The Argus Appeal prides itself on having supporters who trust the integrity of their work, the honesty with which they tell their stories and the decisions they make when allocating funds.

Along with a number of others, Dino will be cycling from Dunkirk to Brussels from the afternoon of the 30th of July to the 2nd of August.
